WORK-IN-PROGRESS:
THE BEGINNING
page one

I thought you might be interested in seeing before and after shots of a piece of work along with the steps in between.  I am using Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8, in digitally manipulating photographs to create a new "reality".

This is the original photo that I began working with.  Even though I hate to do it, I had to remove Jeannie and Sadie from the photo in order to conform the image to my concept...which is (shhhhh....) a secret.

Next, I selected a photograph of a horse in trees...

and erased the background imagery, leaving the horse and a few desirable trees.

I turned the horse into a unicorn by using the Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8 brush to paint the horn.  I selected a base color for the horn from the horse, then, using the brush with reduced opacity and density, I layered other selected colors from the horse over the horn.  I then used the push brush to push the horse's hair around the base of the horn and to lengthen some of the needles on the trees.

Using the layers capabilities within the Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8,  I dragged the unicorn and trees onto the adjusted photo of the stream.  At this point, the unicorn image is a seperate layer on top of the stream image layer.

Next, I wanted to "plant" the trees and the unicorn's hooves into the landscape.  So I used to clone brush, snagging portions of the bottom layer and cloning them over the top of the hooves and tree trunks.  I notice that the light source between the two images do not match, but I decide that I will fix that once I get the rest of the elements into the picture, and hope that it is the right decision!
